Pagan Wedding In Iceland

Sara and Ryne wanted a Pagan wedding In Iceland. Low and behold, our team at Iceland Weddings and Honeymoons made it happen!

Now what exactly is a Pagan wedding ceremony you ask?  In this blog we will educate you on all you need to know about a pagan wedding.

Pagan Wedding Ceremony

First things first, pagan wedding ceremonies are only conducted under the sky, with the exception of caves.  If you want to have your wedding in a church or inside of a venue, that is a no go.  However, if you want to be sheltered from the weather, they are open to conducting your pagan wedding ceremony inside of a cave.

Pagan wedding ceremonies can only be conducted by an appointed Goði.  This means that only a Goði can conduct your wedding.

So what exactly is a paganism?

Paganism or Ásatrú is integrity, honesty, tolerance and respect to mankind and nature.

What happens during a pagan wedding ceremony?

First, the Goði will start with some opening words, these are scripts from the old Icelandic Saga’s and the Edda poems.  The opening words are to bless the time, and the sacred place of where and when the ceremony is being held.

After this, the bride and the groom will recite their personal oaths to each other.  The oaths, are basically your vows to one another. While they recite their oaths to one another they are holding on to an oath ring made out of copper.  The bride will hold onto the oath ring along with the Goði while she recites her oaths and then the groom will hold onto the oath ring along with the Goði while he recites his oaths.

After the oaths have been said, the Goði will then proceed to give them to each other, during this part, all 3 of them hold onto the oath ring.  After that, the rings are exchanged a few more words are said while all 3 hold onto the oath ring.  Lastly, the Goði will drink from a horn, say a few blessings and then pass the horn to the bride and groom whom will also drink from it.

If you have guests with you at your wedding, it is also customary for them to drink out of the horn and to toast well wishes to the bride and groom.  Those who do not wish to drink from the horn can merely raise the horn.

Sara and Ryne

Sara and Ryne reached out to Iceland Weddings and Honeymoons in January of 2023.  They wanted to have a small wedding in Iceland.  They wanted to have a wedding in October of the same year, allowing us almost 10 months to plan their special day.

Our team helped the couple with the following items:

Iceland Marriage License Assistance

Iceland Pagan Celebrant

 Wedding Photographer

Private Wedding Ceremony Location

Hair and Makeup

Wedding adventure after the ceremony

Now that Sara and Ryne had officially had their pagan wedding ceremony and were now married.  They spent the rest of the day with their closes friends.  Allowing them to adventure to other nearby locations and experience all that Iceland has to offer during the month of October.  Including visiting the very so epic Skool Beans cafe.

I wanted to add that it was so cool that everyone who gave their services for our wedding knew each other. You can tell they enjoyed working together and knew each other well enough to work in tandem to make sure our ceremony was perfect from every angle. Our photographer saw my hair and makeup and knew immediately  who did it and said how her and her daughter are so good at what they do. This comment made me feel even more beautiful than what I already saw in the mirror. The camaraderie between all of them made me feel comfortable and confident in our day and how it was going to play out. There was no conflict so everyone felt comfortable to make adjustments to what the other needed. The day was perfect and everyone’s energy lifted each others up. Thank you so much for assisting us in your day. You weren’t physically there but you played possibly the biggest part and I am so happy we got to work with you
